Varttina was a flawless and timeless record. Not surprising from Varttina and Aitara together. Since completing 1994’s ‘Katariina’, Varttina fulfilled their contract with Mute Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Varttina had quite a long carriere and they made many hits. If I may, I suggest “Katariina”. That one song is amazing!
Tumala is probably one of Varttina’s biggest successes for the album - it’s lovely to listen to. Although I prefer the faster paced music, I think Maamo (Mother) is my favorite song on Aitara. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on Aitara is Niin Mie Mieltynen (The Beloved). When listening to Mie Tahon Tanssia (I Want To Dance), it gives me such an energy rush it’s unbelievable. Tammi (The Oak) (4:00) - awsome. Pirsta (Sliver) is a very catchy tune. Outona Omilla Mailla (A Stranger In My Own Land) - This one is what it is: a powerful, primal invitation to love. One of the songs that always stick in my mind is Travuska because the melody in the chorus is so good. I find myself hearing bits of Yotulet (The Night Fire) here and there throughout my waking hours. Although Kannunkaataja (The Tippler) is very melodic it is far from sad. I like the agression and power of Aitara.
