There is so much to love about Tom Russell Band, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. Self-described as Folk with lots of words, Tom Russell Band comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. Poor Man’s Dream isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. Poor Man’s Dream touched my soul like nothing else.
The Heart Of The Working Man without a doubt is the standout song of Poor Man’s Dream. Veteran’s Day motivates you to get up and do something to improve your life and the life of others. Walkin’ On The Moon is a very good song maybe surprisingly better than you at first might’ve imagined. This song may be the most meaningful. The beautiful sound of this track makes you want to close your eyes and sway away with the music. Spansih Burgundy is simple, dignified and effective, Tom Russell Band refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. Gallo Del Cielo is another strong production from Tom Russell Band. Lyrics of La Frontera are precise and evocative. Navajo Rug as a highlight of Poor Man’s Dream contains a ton of exquisite melodies. This is one of those tracks that should not be judged after the first hearing. It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: The White Trash Song, which shows, blatantly, how much Tom Russell Band has evolved as a singer. Northern Towns is a good listen every once in a while.
