Since completing 1991’s ‘Fairytale Of New York’, The Pogues fulfilled their contract with Mute Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Essentials isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. After debuting at No. 1 last week, The Pogues’s album Essentials falls to No. 2 with 879,000, a sales slide of 51%. Smart music for smart people.
Sally Maclennane - A catchy, upbeat tune. Some call Dirty Old Town from Essentials as a quiet invitation of an artist to sit and listen. Opening track The Irish Rover shows the best of The Pogues. A Pair Of Brown Eyes is a very catchy tune. Streams Of Whiskey is a song that definitely grows on you and becomes an album favorite. A Rainy Night In Soho one is one of the better boring ones. Other tracks are good but your best bet is to stick with Fiesta. The Pogues allows each song to breathe and flourish. I was truly moved when I heard Misty Morning, Albert Bridge. White City is cool song though, very addictive. |titile| is a sure sign of something most of us are experiencing, maturity. I find myself hearing bits of The Broad Majestic Shannon here and there throughout my waking hours. A great put together song.
