Since completing 1995’s ‘Telephone Blues’, Sonny Terry fulfilled their contract with Mute Records and where under no obligation to release another album. This -song debut EP shows the promise that Sonny Terry has. Lead single “Telephone Blues” and “Custard Pie Blues” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. I love this album so much, i’ve been crazy about Sonny Terry ever.
Custard Pie Blues is maybe the best thing the group’s ever done. This song stands out greatly from the others. I have all of Sonny Terry’s tracks and Mad Man Blues is probably the most his introspective effort. All Alone Blues - another great track from the Whoopin The Blues: Capitol Recordings 47-50 album. This song is dynamic and dramatic. Early Morning Blues pretty much defines how I feel spiritually. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on Whoopin The Blues: Capitol Recordings 47-50 is Whoopin’ The Blues. Listening to Beer Garden Blues you can hear that Sonny Terry has still amazing chemistry with band members. Screamin’ And Cryin’ Blues is a striking and quite long song. Crow Jane Blues is outstanding work of Sonny Terry. |titile| is the kind of record that makes you remember why music can be so addictive. Airplane Blues is the most memorable and excellent. I was truly moved when I heard Hot Headed Woman. Harmonica Rag is an underrated song: I like its lyrics and melody a lot. Leavin’ Blues is one of the coolest songs Sonny Terry has ever recorded.
