On Let’s Knife album, Shonen Knife have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. After debuting at No. 1 last week, Shonen Knife’s album Let’s Knife falls to No. 2 with 710,000, a sales slide of 99%. Lead single “Riding On The Rocket” and “Bear Up Bison” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Let’s Knife is preety good and all the songs have a good meaning behind them.
In Bear Up Bison Shonen Knife is at his best. Twist Barbie is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Shonen Knife released so far. Tortoise Brand Pot Cleaner’s Theme (Sea Turtle) is probably one of Shonen Knife’s biggest successes for the album - it’s lovely to listen to. Song Antonio Baka Guy is actually a funny song. Ah Singapore marked the continuation of Shonen Knife in style evolution. There is amazing mix of music in Flying Jelly Attack. |titile| is quite refreshing and sets the tone for what is going on in Let’s Knife. Cycling Is Fun - isn’t quite as powerful vocally, but has a beautiful melody. Watchin’ Girl - A strong beat. This track is almost perfect, instrumentals and vocals combine awesomely. Tortoise Brand Pot Cleaner’s Theme (Green Tortoise) is kind of track that compels you to skip back and drink it in one more time before moving on through Let’s Knife. After few listenings I started to like Devil House more and more. Insect Collector is simple, dignified and effective, Shonen Knife refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. This is one of those songs that musicians strive to write and create.
