Since completing 1995’s ‘Action Time Vision’, Sham 69 fulfilled their contract with Blue Note Records and where under no obligation to release another album. John Digester has compared writing for Sham 69’s new album to that on ‘Kings and Queens’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. Since Sham 69 last CD (Kings and Queens) on Blue Note Records back in 1995, I have felt a massive void in my life. Kings and Queens constantly brilliant.
Sham 69 sings Borstal Breakout in such a comforting, confident voice that you can’t help but be moved. Family Life is simple, dignified and effective, Sham 69 refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. Hurry Up Hurry is really the reason why I recommend buying Kings and Queens. I Don’t Wanna - I used to hate this song, but now it’s one of my favorites. Kids Are United (3:37) - Oh, this is one of my favorites! Music and lyrics of Reggae Giro creates, for me, fertile ground for daydreaming. Tell Us The Truth sets the tone for the entire album. They Don’t Understand is a song that definitely grows on you and becomes an album favorite. This track is full of harmonies and gets Kings and Queens off to a relaxing start.
