This disc has all of the essential Scott Joplin classics. On Complete Works of Scott Joplin, Vol. 1 album, Scott Joplin have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Since completing 1993’s ‘Please Say You Will’, Scott Joplin fulfilled their contract with Virgin Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Scott Joplin is one of my favourite bands of all time.
I can’t stop playing Picture of Her Face. Great Crush Collision March to me is the best you can get from Scott Joplin. Harmony Club Waltz has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. Combination March is one of those songs that will put you in a good mood. The beautiful sound of this track makes you want to close your eyes and sway away with the music. Maple Leaf Rag is one of the coolest songs Scott Joplin has ever recorded. Swipesy-Cake Walk rocked my world when I popped it into my car stereo. I like the idea behind Sunflower Slow Drag. The first time I listened to Peachtree Rag I was struck by its excellent sound. Augustan Club Waltz the elegant and beautiful song on the album is hard to describe. Easy Winners which is my favorite is a truly Scott Joplin sounding song. After you’ve listened to Cleopha, most everything else can’t hold up and is second rate. Strenuous Life is a amazing sing-along.
