Since completing 1995’s ‘Goodbye, Good-Lookin”, Robbie Fulks fulfilled their contract with Savoy Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Mila Sparrow has compared writing for Robbie Fulks’s new album to that on ‘South Mouth’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. There is no doubt that Robbie Fulks has talent. This is one of Robbie Fulks best albums
Voice of Robbie Fulks in I Told Her Lies is honest and guitar work is subtle and poignant. Heart, I Wish You Were Here still maintains something of a specific flourish. Robbie Fulks must have run out of lyrics on the next track I Push Right Over. Cold Statesville Ground is perfect. Forgotten But Not Gone is almost impossible to review. Busy Not Crying is a marvelous, simple song by Robbie Fulks at the top of his game. I Was Just Leaving (3:20) a good melody. What The Lord Hath Wrought (Any Fool Can Knock Down) is nothing short of a modern masterpiece. Dirty-Mouthed Flo is a song that will not reduce you to tears but leave you thinking long after South Mouth have ended. Lyrics of You Wouldn’t Do That To Me are precise and evocative. The song Fuck This Town ending is my favorite… so catchy! South Richmond Girl is the more seemingly obscure song on South Mouth that bear up best to repeated listening.
