This is the first studio album from Putumayo since bad diagnosis in 1995. Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Putumayo on ‘Ya Rayah - Rachid Taha (Algeria)’. Putumayo was a flawless and timeless record. Not surprising from Putumayo and Cairo To Casablanca together. This is one of the best cd’s i have heard through the whole thing.
This track is possibly the biggest guilty pleasure on Cairo To Casablanca. Strong percussion and poignant lyrics of this track really gets under your skin. Dikra - Raina Rai (Algeria) is new, fresh, and hypnotizing. This is probably my favorite song on the album. From the sound of it, I believe the song can be a big radio hit. Ya Maalem - Maurice El Mediouni (Algeria) is a bit different from Putumayo stereotypical stuff. After you’ve listened to Leali - Rasha (Svdan), most everything else can’t hold up and is second rate. Through The Veil - Jamshied Sharifi & Hassan Hakmoun (Iran Morocco) has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. Putumayo must have run out of lyrics on the next track Madanitche - Kadda Cherif Hadria (Algeria).
