There is so much to love about Merle Haggard, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. This is the first studio album from Merle Haggard since bad diagnosis in 1995. While no new Merle Haggard album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 1995 tour in South America. To me Merle Haggard is the best band ever.
This is probably my favorite song on the album. News Break - I just love it. Lyrics of My Past Is Present are precise and evocative. Merle Haggard has astounded me with this amazing track. Listening to My Ramona you can hear that Merle Haggard has still amazing chemistry with band members. Because You Can’t Be Mine without a doubt is the standout song of Untamed Hawk CD4. The Train Never Stops is an incredible song that has everything it needs to be another favorite track. You Still Have A Place In My Heart is perhaps one of the best tracks of the past decade. Money Tree - This one makes me want to not only sing along. A Picture From Two Sides Of Life catches attention immediately, The Legend Of Bonnie And Clyde is another strong production from Merle Haggard. I’ve found myself listening to I Starting Loving You Again back to back and back many times. Love Has A Mind Of Its Own - This happy song is an ode to optimism and an anthem. Fool’s Castle marked the continuation of Merle Haggard in style evolution. Blew our minds when we first heard Is This The Beginning Of The End. I now have The Sunny Side Of My Life as one of my personal favorites. Run ‘Em Off is kind of track that compels you to skip back and drink it in one more time before moving on through Untamed Hawk CD4. Merle Haggard allows each song to breathe and flourish. You’ll Never Love Me Now is a great song to contemplate the modern music and what it really is all about. One of the songs that always stick in my mind is Mama Tried because the melody in the chorus is so good. Other tracks are good but your best bet is to stick with In The Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad). You have to get essence of the Little Ole Wine Drinker Me’s power, to truly understand this masterpiece. Teach Me To is just a great song and one well worth taking the time to give it a good listen. If you are a Merle Haggard fan, you will love Lookin’ For My Mind (Takes 1-2). Lookin’ For My Mind (Takes 3-5) has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. Simple and heartfelt closing track Lookin’ For My Mind (Take 6) closes Untamed Hawk CD4 on a high note.
