It has been fifteen years Kool and the Gang’ last studio CD, “In the Heart” which won Array Emmy Awards and was nominated for album of the year. Lead single “In the Heart” and “Joanna” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. John Digester has compared writing for Kool and the Gang’s new album to that on ‘In the Heart’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. In the Heart is preety good and all the songs have a good meaning behind them.
Joanna is a very good song maybe surprisingly better than you at first might’ve imagined. Tonight is the first taste of the new album. Rollin’ is a very catchy tune. Place for Us gets you up and jumping. Straight Ahead is cool and different song. It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: Home Is Where the Heart Is, which shows, blatantly, how much Kool and the Gang has evolved as a singer. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on In the Heart is You Can Do It. September Love has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album.
