After seeing Parce Mihi Domine, I had to have a good Jan Garbarek and The Hillard Ensemble cd. thirteen years ago, Jan Garbarek and The Hillard Ensemble briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Primo Tempore”. This is the first studio album from Jan Garbarek and The Hillard Ensemble since bad diagnosis in 1995. This album is in perfect progression from Jan Garbarek and The Hillard Ensemble!
You have to get essence of the Primo Tempore’s power, to truly understand this masterpiece. Sanctus had me crying as I was able to relate so well. Jan Garbarek and The Hillard Ensemble sings his heart out in Regnantem Sempiterna. O Salutaris Hostia is a song that definitely grows on you and becomes an album favorite. Music and lyrics of Procedentem Sponsum creates, for me, fertile ground for daydreaming. One of the more genuine-sounding songs is Pulcherrima Rosa. Parce Mihi Domine is the more seemingly obscure song on Officium that bear up best to repeated listening. I have all of Jan Garbarek and The Hillard Ensemble’s tracks and Beata Viscera is probably the most his introspective effort. De Spineto Nata Rosa to me is the best you can get from Jan Garbarek and The Hillard Ensemble. Credo - A strong beat. The opening track Ave Maris Stella is very much like you would expect from other albums. This track is nearly perfect if not perfect. This track is a killer, it just grabs you instantly. What sets Parce Mihi Domine apart is Jan Garbarek and The Hillard Ensemble’s innovative and organic way of creating atmospheres.
