It has been eleven years J. J. Cale’ last studio CD, “Closer To You” which won Array Grammy Awards and was nominated for album of the year. This is the first studio album from J. J. Cale since bad diagnosis in 1994. On Closer To You album, J. J. Cale have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Another great offering from J. J. Cale.
Sho-Biz Blues is the more seemingly obscure song on Closer To You that bear up best to repeated listening. It’s also one of those rare songs that touchingly comfort the listener. J. J. Cale must have run out of lyrics on the next track Devil’s Nurse. It took me a little time but I ended up loving Like You Used Too. Borrowed Time catches attention immediately, This song is very powerful, its catchy melody will have you singing along in no time. One listen to the sheer beauty of Brown Dirt was all I needed. All of songs on Closer To You and have something to say letting alone Hard Love. Ain’t Love Funny motivates you to get up and do something to improve your life and the life of others. This song is dynamic and dramatic. Steve’s Song - arguably the best track on Closer To You album.
