This is the first studio album from Frank Black since bad diagnosis in 1993. Since completing 1993’s ‘Los Angeles’, Frank Black fulfilled their contract with Mute Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Frank Black’s debut, ‘Frank Black’, does not fit easily into one genre. This is one of the best cd’s i have heard through the whole thing.
I Heard Ramona Sing one of the most beautiful songs i’ve ever heard. The sound of Hang on to Your Ego is difficult to describe, as it seems to squirm in a sensual manner, unlike anything ever created. Fu Manchu is one of the best records ever. Places Named After Numbers catches attention immediately, The first time I listened to Czar I was struck by its exquisite sound. Old Black Dawning is a fine track on any terms. I like the agression and power of Ten Percenter. Brackish Boy is simple, dignified and effective, Frank Black refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. Although Two Spaces is very melodic it is far from sad. Frank Black offers the kind of music here that makes you reflect on yourself. It’s also one of those rare songs that touchingly comfort the listener. Adda Lee is a very catchy tune. Every Time I Go Around Here - This one is what it is: a powerful, primal invitation to love. You have to get essence of the Don’t Ya Rile ‘Em’s power, to truly understand this masterpiece.
