Lead single “The Road To Durham (Altan)” and “Ferry Me Over (Andy M. Stewart and Manus Lunny)” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. There is so much to love about Folk - Various Artists, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. This -song debut EP shows the promise that Folk - Various Artists has. Cool, but I like their other actual stuff better like Back To The Future 1990.
Ferry Me Over (Andy M. Stewart and Manus Lunny) which is my favorite is a truly Folk - Various Artists sounding song. I Buried My Wife and Danced On Top Of Her, Down The Back (Noel Hill) is a very catchy tune. The Morning After Love (Joe and Antoinette Mckenna) - For me, this is the best of the album. Lyrics of Eleanor Rigby (De Dannan) are precise and evocative. Tuirne Mhaire (Maire Ni Chathasaigh and Chris Newman) is almost impossible to review. Simple and heartfelt closing track Sliabh Gallion Braes (Dolores Keane and John Faulkner) closes Back To The Future 1990 on a high note. Once you hear The Banks Of Tsulan (Noel Hill), you will listen to it over and over. This song stands out greatly from the others. The Call and The Answer (De Dannan) on Back To The Future 1990 is solid and easy to listen to. From the sound of it, I believe the song can be a big radio hit. This is one of those songs that musicians strive to write and create. The Clumsy Lover (De Dannan) actually sounds so joyous, that you can practically see a smile on Folk - Various Artists’s face. End Of Winter (Joe and Antoinette Mckenna) has a fun tempo. I was truly moved when I heard They Wounded Old Ireland (Andy M. Stewart). Midnight On The Water (Mairtin O’connor) has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Folk - Various Artists’s strong vocals come to the fore. After about the third Craigie Hills (Dolores Keane and John Faulkner) listen through, I began to believe this song is Folk - Various Artists’s essence. Lady Gethin (Maire Ni Chathasaigh and Chris Newman) is one of the most beautiful songs ever to grace my stereo. Folk - Various Artists rocks harder than ever with I’d Cross The Wild Atlantic (Andy M. Stewart).
