fourteen years ago, Ethnic - Various Artists briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Sardinia / Effisio Melis”. After seeing Nigeria / Eleja Choir, I had to have a good Ethnic - Various Artists cd. Jim Jones has compared writing for Ethnic - Various Artists’s new album to that on ‘Vol. 1 - Ethnic Music Classics, 1925-48′ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. This is one of the best cd’s i have heard through the whole thing.
I think Sardinia / Effisio Melis is the best song Ethnic - Various Artists has ever done. Russia / Savelli Walevitch is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Ethnic - Various Artists released so far. This is probably my favorite song on the album. Rajahstan / Bhoora Singh and Party gives taste of what makes Ethnic - Various Artists special as a musician. Cuba / Septeto Matamoros is a song you cannot help but think about at odd moments in your day. Rumania / Anon. Group makes a person feel perfect. Overall a nice softer song. Macedonia / Stephanya G. Penchevya is an underrated song: I like its lyrics and melody a lot. Society Islands / Les Tamaru has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Ethnic - Various Artists’s strong vocals come to the fore. Morocco / Raoul Journo great lyrics, dark, deep, angry and cool.Album opener South Africa / Zwabesho Sibisi is a bright, upbeat ditty. Japan / Imperial Household Orchestra is one of the best records ever. India / Master Manahar Barve is Ethnic - Various Artists’s best work in years. Ethnic - Various Artists must have run out of lyrics on the next track The Basque / Triki-Triki. Sweden / Eric Sahlstrom as a highlight of Vol. 1 - Ethnic Music Classics, 1925-48 contains a ton of amazing melodies. I like to sing along with Yiddish / Raderman-Bekerman Orchestra, though I mess up the lyrics sometimes. Don’t judge Poland / Goralska Orkiestra on the first listening. Jamaica / Lord Composer - a classic song. Abyssinia (Ethiopia) / Haile, Ighigou, et al. is probably the highlight of the album. Andalucia (Spain) / La Nica De Los Peines is worth the money. This song could easily nestle itself onto the world top playlists. Fiji / Andi Thakambau (2:33) - Oh, this is one of my favorites!
