four years ago, Count Basie briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Pennies From Heaven”. Count Basie was a flawless and timeless record. Not surprising from Count Basie and Complete Decca Recordings - 1937 (CD 1) together. This -song debut EP shows the promise that Count Basie has. Overall, I would highly recommend Complete Decca Recordings - 1937 (CD 1) CD.
Pennies From Heaven is one of the best records ever. Swing At The Daisy Chain is a good listen every once in a while. Roseland Shuffle is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Count Basie released so far. Exactly Like You is Count Basie’s best work in years. Overall a nice softer song. The Glory Of Love is just a great song and one well worth taking the time to give it a good listen. Boogie Woogie (I May Be Wrong) still maintains something of a specific flourish. I have all of Count Basie’s tracks and Smarty (You Know It All) is probably the most his introspective effort. Count Basie emotions are reflected through One O Clock Jump. Voice and instruments in Listen My Children and You Shall Hear complement each other. John S Idea is the most memorable and cool. Good Morning Blues-1st Take - is a breath or fresh air compared to many previous songs of Count Basie. I was truly moved when I heard Good Morning Blues-2nd Take. Our Love Was Meant To Be is a bit of a show-tune. Time Out - A classic Count Basie track. Topsy is new, fresh, and hypnotizing. This track is full of harmonies and gets Complete Decca Recordings - 1937 (CD 1) off to a relaxing start. Out The Window is simple, dignified and effective, Count Basie refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. This track is a fabulous selection of easy listening, suitable for any age, taste or occasion. Best song on the album, love it.
