Self-described as Classical with lots of words, Chanticleer comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. Sing We Christmas isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. There is so much to love about Chanticleer, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. I greatly enjoyed this CD.
O magnum mysterium is the more seemingly obscure song on Sing We Christmas that bear up best to repeated listening. Some of the arrangements found on Sing We Christmas are surprisingly edgy. Charming song, great melody. O Jesulein s Jesulein mild is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. Hodie Christus natus est is a pleasing, and full of overall coherence that goes beyond other creations. Only one song from Sing We Christmas named Marabile mysterium really got me. Chanticleer must have run out of lyrics on the next track Verbum caro factum est: Y la Virgen le dezia. A un nilorando is the album’s biggest hit, I think. Here Is The Little Door is really a nice song to relax and listen too. Noel canon is nothing short of a modern masterpiece. Quelle est cette odeur agrle is a catchy, up-tempo track that has influence of music streams without leaning too much in that direction. El Noi de la Mare is an upbeat song with a constant snare hit. A Christmas Carol has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. So much energy, so exciting a sound. The sound in In the bleak mid-winter is really warm and Chanticleer’s signature voice is still very much present. Glory to the newborn King is one of the coolest songs Chanticleer has ever recorded. This track is full of harmonies and gets Sing We Christmas off to a relaxing start.
