Island Angel isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. Island Angel carries a very emotional theme throughout the album. Since completing 1993’s ‘Tommy Peoples/The Windmill/Fintan McManus’s’, Altan fulfilled their contract with Mute Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Island Angel is the best essence of Altan.
A unique and uplifting song. Fermanagh Highland/Donegal Highland/John Doherty’s/King George IV is the more seemingly obscure song on Island Angel that bear up best to repeated listening. |titile| is a sure sign of something most of us are experiencing, maturity. Island Angel couldn’t start better than with the up up-beat title track Andy De Jarlis/Ingonish/Mrs. McGhee. I find myself hearing bits of Humors of Andytown/Kylebrack Rambler/The Gladstone here and there throughout my waking hours. Du’lama’n stands out to me for its audacious melody and sheer beauty. Music in Mazurka is amazing as in all tracks of Island Angel. Simply the finest work ever from this multi-talented singer. Glory Reel/The Heathery Cruach is the first taste of the new album. An Caili’n Gaelach as well as many of songs is a short story in miniature. Drumnagarry/Pirrie Wirrie/Big John’s very upbeat. Aingeal An Oilea’in/Island Angel - is a breath or fresh air compared to many previous songs of Altan.
